In a move to add more hometown talent to the roster in years to come the Kapuskasing Flyers have teamed up with the minor hockey association’s youth travel teams to create a new developmental model.
Under the new program all of the youth travel teams are being rebranded from the former Icehawks name to the Flyers.
There is also a new logo with the teams adopting a new fierce eagle head. New general manager
Alex Plamondon says they wanted to be similar to other programs offered in the north including Timmins.
“You know in the past we have had the regional express at the U15 level that’s kind of the regional program,” he said. “And now with other locations like Timmins having their U15 Triple A program. We want to offer as much as possible the best hockey we can in Kap.”
He adds the teams will also benefit with easier affiliation.
“U-11, U13 are going to be ‘A’ hockey teams then the U-15 double A and the U-18 Triple A,” he noted “Now how it all works is how we are going to approach the different philosophies and we want to ensure that the players have an opportunity to develop and move on to the next level.”
