Kap History – Mattice fire from 1963 destroys businesses and homes

Today’s look at local and area history has details on a large fire that took down two major businesses and two homes in Mattice.

The April 10th 1963 edition of the Northern Times reports that the fire broke out shortly after 3 on the Sunday, April 7th of that year. The Mattice Fire Protection Association were supported by firefighters from across the area including: St Pie X, Hearst, the Lowther Air Force base, lands and forest personnel and the TransCanada Pipeline.

Fire protection association head Roland Brunelle said if they didn’t get the help fighting the blaze then it could have been much worse. Some furniture and belongings from the hotel and the homes were saved.
