Kap History – Grocery stores open until 9 pm on Fridays

Grocery Stores extending their shopping hours on Friday nights is the top of this week’s look at Kapuskasing History.

The front page story in the April 24th 1963 edition of the Northern Times reported that as of May 10th, hours would be extended to 9 pm on Friday nights to the six grocery stores. The shoppers in the community had been asking for the new hours similar to what other businesses were doing.

The request was sent to the retail section of the Chamber of Commerce where a decision was reached with the grocery store owners. It was agreed that extended hours would provide additional opportunities for service to local and out of town customers. Grocery stores would continue to be closed on Wednesday as most businesses were back then.

We thank the Kapuskasing Public Library for use of its archives for our weekly segment.
