Kapuskasing history – Spruce Falls acquires new specialty designed box cars

Spruce Falls Power and Paper Company is the subject of our weekly feature about Kapuskasing history.

The story is from the November 14, 1962 edition of the Northern Times and goes into detail about Spruce Falls acquiring specially designed box cars for newsprint transportation to the New York Times.

The mill acquired 75 – 50 foot long rail cars with cushion under frames, steel floors and extra high bodies. Each of the new cars took place of two and a half standard newsprint cars that reduced the rolling stock down to 60 per cent.

Three railroad companies, the CNR, the ONR and New York Central worked on an agreement with Spruce Falls for the transportation.

A special thank you to the Kapuskasing Public Library for allowing us to use the archives of the Northern Times for our segment.
