Kapuskasing to still host evacuees in coming weeks

Precautionary evacuations of residents from Kashechewan First Nation to Kapuskasing in the coming weeks will proceed, albeit with some changes. That’s the word from Missanabie Cree First National Business Corporation General Manager Joe Sayers. He says that Missinabie Cree and ISN Maskwa gotten support from the federal government to provide medical services where the evacuees will be staying.

“All of the vulnerable members of the community have been identified and are going to another location,” he said. “More like critical types of healthcare such as people on dialysis that need more intensive support will not be hosted in Kapuskasing.”

Sayers says the town of Kap was identified as one of the locations for the evacuees and efforts were made to work with all service providers including healthcare in the community.

“Letter from the Kapuskasing hospital wasn’t unexpected however their refusal to engage with a community health planner since January, has been an ongoing concern not only for us as a service provider but also Kashechewan First Nation,” he added

Sayers hopes that host community residents open their hearts and welcome the evacuees who are going to a very difficult time leaving their homes because of emergencies.
