Author Terry West says the north and his hometown provided lots of memories for his books

A northern Ontario author says his hometown provided him with lots of great memories growing up that he’s been able to include it in his books.

Hearst native Terry West has penned several books where the early days of the north are featured. He said a well know author and good friend gave him some helpful advise telling him to write about what he knew.

“What I know is northern Ontario, I have a feel for the Northern Ontario that I knew of course from 1940 to 1965,” he said. “Those were my years in Hearst.”

West grew up over a convenience store on the main corner in Hearst next to Wilson’s Men’s Wear.

“I have a feel for how people reacted to each other in my time and how society was organized,” he said. “How we came together, separated sometimes and came together.”

West released his latest book “A Time To Disappear” during last year’s Hearst 100th celebrations. His books are available in Hearst as well as through public libraries and for sale online.
