Kap town council settles on 11 and a quarter per cent tax increase

An 11 and a quarter per cent tax increase was approved by Kapuskasing Town Council last night. It’s one of the largest increases seen in recent memory. Council first voted against the original proposal of eight per cent, and settled on the new amount after some additional services were added.

It represents $37 a month or $337 a year increase to a $3,000 tax bill.

“Council decided to make the move this year,” said Mayor Dave Plourde. “It’s not an easy one this year, but nonetheless had to be done. It’s the last time we have to go down that road rectify what we have of by way of operational funding.”

The town will use some of the money cut for a housing needs assessment survey. It’s hoped that money can be re-cooped from a government grant.

It will be another two weeks before the capital works budget is finalized…estimated to be at $5.4 million. That includes the completion of Brunelle Road North, the Connecting Link from the Service Master business to Caron Street, as well as the construction of several other streets.
