Ontario Power Generation says Abitibi Canyon and Otter Rapids dams will be busy with construction

Just as construction work is wrapping up at Smokey Falls and Little Long generating stations northeast of Kapuskasing, Ontario Power Generations say improvements on two more dams is on the way. Spokesperson Kate Cantin says Otter Rapids and Abitibi Canyon north of Smooth Rock Falls will be busy places.

“And then we also have a construction camp that is almost done now, it supposed to be ready for May the first,” she said. “And that’s going to support work happening at Otter Rapids so we do have some unit overhauls going on there, probably be for the next five years. They’re going to do all five units at Otter Rapids.”

Cantin says the camp will house most of the workers.

“The camp is going to accommodate 120 workers so that’s probably going to support realistically the projects that are going to be happening for the next five to ten years at Abitibi Canyon and Otter Rapids,” she added.

Repairs at Abitibi Canyon include the replacement of the breaker roof, overhaul and upgrades to generator unit one and concrete repairs on the main dam.
