Kap town council passes bylaw regarding hosting evacuees from the James Bay coast

Even though the town of Kap won’t be hosting forest fire and flood evacuees from the James Bay Coast this year, it still wants to be considered the lead in hosting them.

Town council passed a resolution this week that the municipality must be the solely responsible to manage evacuation activities in order to alleviate additional stress and pressures that are added to community services.

Mayor Dave Plourde says an emergency in one community creates another one in Kapuskasing.

It’s also to ensure that the safety and wellbeing of our residents and of the residents we are hosting,” he said. “And making sure that the services we provide are exactly are exactly what they need during that emergency.”

Plourde says until the town gets full repayment of the $7.1 million, it’s out for now.

To go six months or eight months without repayment of those funds I think is fair to say that a repeat of that is not an option,” he said. “So certainly there has to be some sort of securities put in place so it doesn’t happen in the future if we were to host.”
