Fraud prevention talk on Thursday afternoon in Kapuskasing

The Kapuskasing Public Library is hosting a fraud prevention talk today at 2 pm at the Golden Age Centre. OPP Community Safety Officer Constable Kyler Brouwer will offer some simple tips to keep people safe from fraudsters.

“I mean it use to be just door to door or phone calls,” he said. “With the Internet now, it’s text messages, emails, pop ups. There’s lot of different ways that they can get a hold of you.”

He says fraud is not only on the rise in Canada but across the region.

“In January a victim in Kap was told they won free groceries for a year and then got out $800 in Walmart Gift Cards,” he explained. “Another example in February in Cochrane there was an investment scam and someone lost $18,000 in bit coin.”
