Snowmobile trails south of Kap and Hearst closed for the season, 2nd shortest on record

Northern Corridor Du Nord, which oversees District 15 snowmobile trails reports that all trails are red or unavailable due to the mild temperatures. However, district manager Pam Boutilier says the group is not giving up on the season yet and hopes there’s still one more blast of snow. There is just one patch of yellow or limited available trails from Hornepayne and Highway 631 through to Geraldton.  Consult the OFSC’s interactive trail guide for further information.

Meanwhile, further south, it seems that snowmobiling season just began, and it’s already over.

Like so many others, trails from Temagami to Iroquois Falls and Timmins – OFSC District 14 – are officially closed. District president Gilbert Fortin Fortin says there’s no real chance they’ll reopen.

“In order to reopen the trails, well besides getting a lot of snow” he observes,” we would be needing a lot of cold weather, because we have too much marsh and waterworks that has unthawed now.”

“Unless you want to buy a lot of parts and make local dealers happy,” Fortin continues, “go ahead and wreck your machine, as long as it’s not on OFSC trails, because officially those trails are not available right now, and it would be kind of illegal to stay on there.”

Fortin takes solace in the eight weeks of sledding we did get this year.  The record low is 2010, when there were only seven weeks.
