Kapuskasing mayor appreciates residents who attended special meeting

The mayor of Kapuskasing says he hopes information given to residents about the budget process addressed their concerns during last week’s special council meeting. Dave Plourde says councilors were appreciative of the large crowd that was in attendance to learn more about what’s facing the town.

“And what lengths we go to try and come up with a budget that makes sense for all residents in Kapuskasing. And for the most part I think it was a good meeting. If you asked most of the people that came out of there they have a better understanding and that’s what we were trying to achieve.

Council sent back a suggested municipal tax increase of 10.5 per cent to administration for further review. Plourde says four straight years of a zero percent increase might have looked great but did the town no favours.

“That’s one of the reasons why we are where we are at today. I think costs rise for everyone and they do for the municipality as well so I think going forward we all have to recognize that budgets have to go up a little bit every year.”

The next council meeting is Monday, March 11th where more news about the budget is expected.
