An overflowing crowd of concerned residents packed the Kapuskasing council chambers at a special meeting late yesterday afternoon to voice their displeasure over a possible 10.5 per cent tax increase.
Administrator Guylain Baril says the hike is necessary to overcome a shortfall of over $1.24 million. Finance Committee chairman Martin Dinnissen asked town staff to go through every department to see if any more savings can be found to reduce the increase down to a more palatable number.
During the meeting residents fired off numerous questions at council and administration ranging from the loss of $7.1 million in evacuation expenses, councillor and mayor salary, as well as other budgetary items.
An update on the budget process is expected in two weeks at the next council meeting.
