Kap History: Eastview Public School opens in 1961

The opening of a new public elementary school in Kapuskasing is the focus of this week’s history segment.

An April 1961 edition of the Northern Times has full details about the event that was attended by about 200 people.

There were several guest speakers including Alex Stevenson the chairman of the school board. He said that public schools were growing in the community.

J. H. Kennedy, assistant superintendent of elementary education in Ontario was another guest speaker. Kennedy told the crowd of about 200 parents that student attitudes had changed over the past 30 years. He praised happy classrooms that were created by teachers who were responsible for eliminating old fears and dislikes usually associated with attending school.
