New life breathed into Pamour open pit with first gold mining there since 2009

The external relations manager for Newmont Porcupine says the mining company is investing “hundreds of millions of dollars” into reviving gold mining in the Pamour open pit, as the Hollinger pit winds down.

Gerry Stinson says the water in the pit is now being treated. Mining is expected to begin in the next few months.

“We’ve got a pretty big resource there and currently, the mine life is sitting at about 11 years or so,” he outlines, “so we are planning to have operations continue into the 2035-2036 time frame.”

Stinson says the Hollinger workers will transfer to Pamour, in rural east Timmins, and a few other jobs will be added there.

“Currently, Hollinger is slated to have last ore late this year. So the timing of Pamour has been pretty much synchronized with the slowdown at Hollinger, to ensure that our operations folk and gear can continue to operate seamlessly.”

The Pamour pit hasn’t been mined since 2009.
