Kap Town council has asked the Ontario Ministry of Transportation to include the final stretch of the Connecting Link on a massive resurfacing project from town limits to Fauquier.
Mayor Dave Plourde says in order to participate in this project, the town must look for other sources of government funding to cover the cost after its application to the Connecting Link program was denied.
“For that section of highway we would realize savings of approximately 500 to 600 thousand dollars, and that’s not taking into consideration what the MTO could see in savings,” he said. “That’s just the town of Kapuskasing’s section of highway.”
Plourde says the town is under a tight deadline to secure other funding as the Ministry needs an answer by the end of this year.
He adds the plan is to add a third lane from Caron Street to the Clear Lake Road intersection which would be helpful when the highway is shut down due to accidents or weather.
“What it really does is when we see traffic backed up, and normally it’s truck traffic going westerly and that lane gets occupied so then we have two other lanes we can get passed on,” he said. “So I think it’s both a safety issue and the Connecting Link betterment of road issue.”
