A novel idea has been hatched at the Ininew Friendship Centre in Cochrane, to help preserve Indigenous language and traditions.
Language revitalization worker Mary Mathews says the centre is looking for Cree hymn singers.
“Sometimes I will hear elders singing hymns at funerals,” she notes. “We’re thinking it would be nice to find different people that sing these hymns, and record them.”
Taking it a step further, Mathews says a group could be formed to sing at events organized by Ininew, or by anyone else.
“I do not think these hymns are just for funerals. These songs are beautiful when they sing, to share that feeling when you hear them sing.”
