Kapuskasing hosting Association of French Municipalities of Ontario Meeting this weekend

More parity, diversity and inclusion in municipal politics across the province! That’s the theme of this year’s Association of French Municipalities of Ontario Conference set for Kapuskasing’s Civic Centre starting tomorrow night. President Nicole Fortier-Levesque is thrilled that the area is getting a chance to host the event after it was cancelled two years ago because of the pandemic.

“And also last year it was Moonbeam’s 100th anniversary and Fauquier and Hearst,” she said. “So to us it was very important to have this conference in Kap because of all of those festivities.”

About 50 people from across the province including from as far as Ottawa and Windsor are expected to take part. The conference features a welcome reception, trade show, a concert with musician Mitch Jean, and various workshops.

Fortier Levesque says the association is pushing to have more women elected to municipal councils.

“It’s going to be a round table with young generation of elected officials,” she said. “We want them to tell us what they need to feel comfortable in their jobs so this is something that will have a great importance in our conference.”
