A free night out and enjoying playing board games. That’s the focus of an event planned for Saturday, September 23rd by the Timmins Board Game Group.
Organizer Joyce Johnston says her group has been around for about ten years, with the emphasis on socializing and having fun. She plays against her four- and five-year-old grandchildren, up to people in the 80s.
The event on the 23rd is at the Travelodge Hotel. It’s called “Play Your Favourite Game”. Johnston says anyone is welcome, but registration is needed because the space is limited.
“If you have a CAS (membership card), you can get a cheap room at the Travelodge,” she says, mostly aimed at out-of-towners, “because they’re letting us use the room from seven o’clock ‘til whenever. Last time, we stayed ‘til 1:00am.”
Johnston says the Timmins Board Game Group is reviving, after being sidelined by the pandemic. It’s open to all ages, and winning takes a back seat.
“Our focus is more about socializing and having fun, and the winning is a bonus. It’s not your main goal. It’s not what I call battling games.”
