The Kapuskasing Flyers of the Great North U18 Hockey League have asked town council for a new agreement regarding ice fees at the Sports Palace. Last year a long standing deal for free ice-time between the two sides was rescinded by the previous council.
General manager and president Jimmy Cote proposed a five year package that calls for the same ice time rate as minor hockey and revenue from advertising inside the building.
“I think we got our message to the councillors and to mayor Plourde that we need a partnership, we need help,” he said. “Our costs for the budget keeps going up up and up. And we just want a partnership with the town to make sure we can plan strategically for the next five years.”
Cote says he wants a fair deal for both sides.
“Our projected budget is around $320,000 which has almost doubled in the past six years,” he said. “The bus price keep going up, the accommodations when we are on the road. Everything keeps going up and we can’t always rely on our sponsorship and people that come support the Flyers at the gate.”
