Kapuskasing’s first community garden in several years is coming along beautifully according to committee member Amanda Rickard. She notes that 10 garden beds and troughs of potatoes have been planted in the gore behind the Civic Centre.
“So at the harvest season, we are going to be able to give half to our community and the other half will come to the kitchen,” she said. “And the community garden is ran by a number of agencies who got together and will be caring for it over the summer.”
Rickard says what could have been a very expensive project has been done at minimal costs thanks to the support of local businesses.
“The garden boxes were donated by Caisse Alliance, so that was a huge thing for us,” she said. “Green First donated the wood for the shed that is coming. We had our water tank donated.”
