Bear statue removed from Government Road location

You may have noticed that the bear statue is missing from its location on Government Road in Kapuskasing. It was taken down by the artist and new owner of the former Chamber of Commerce building last week. Town Administrator Guylain Baril says the bear statue has not been town property for a while.

“It belongs to the chamber of commerce,” he said. “It remained the logo of the community but the chamber office was then sold, and been in the hands of the new owner for a while now along with the bear.”

As for something new to welcome people to the community, Baril says that idea was voted down by council about three years ago due to budgetary reasons.

“We did have a project to erect a new town of Kap sign on the golf course land closer to where the parking is on that land,” he said. “It was going to be a brick construction with Kapuskasing letters on it and some lighting.”
