Two major road construction projects could cause more traffic issues for Kap motorists

Another summer of delays due to road construction is set to begin as early as today with not one but two major projects. Work is expected to start on the Connecting Link from Service Master to Caron Street, while reconstruction of Brunelle Road North from the lights at Government Road to the Sports Palace begins in the coming months.

Public Works General Manager Eric Cote says at times both projects could be going at the same time.

“The first segment of the summer you are going to see the highway project,” he said. “So once the piping work is completed on the highway — there is another secondary crew that’s going to come in and finish off the highway project. But the piping crew is going to come over and start the Brunelle Road north project.”

There was a slight delay to get shovels in the ground as Town Council held back both projects so changes could be made to bring them within budget. Government Road will be wrapped up this year, while Brunelle Road will be completed over two years.

Cote says they are staging the construction differently to help minimize some of the traffic congestion.

“We are going to build the third lane ahead of time,” he said. “We are going to build the third lane first basically, then we are going to be able to reopen full traffic so two-way traffic on the centre lane and the third lane which has been added.”
