Warm Belly Soup Kitchen and Food Bank raise nearly $19,000 from smile cookie sales

Kapuskasing finished third in Northern Ontario for smile cookie sales last week. Warm Belly Soup Kitchen Coordinator Amanda Rickard says 12,491 cookies were sold and raised just over $19,000 for both the kitchen and the food bank.

“They say partway through a campaign people start getting bored with it and the numbers start going down,” she said. “Not the smile cookie campaign this year every day Kapuskasing just kept boosting up that ante.”

Rickard says the next project is to bring back a community garden which was last planted about 20 years ago.

“We’re gonna have a pick as you please,” she said. “We will keep half of the garden for the warm belly soup kitchen and the Kapuskasing Food Bank. But the other half I think we’re hoping that people will go and pick what they need in exchange they will help keep the gardens clean and weeded.”

A location and partnerships are among the plans to be finalized.
