66-year-old man killed by Kirkland Lake OPP

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit says it was a 66-year-old man who died in Kirkland Lake Tuesday morning, after being shot by an OPP officer.

Police were called to the scene of a man reportedly carrying an edged weapon at about 7:30 a.m. They found him in the parking lot of École secondaire catholique l’Envolée du Nord.

When the man wouldn’t drop the weapon, a taser was used, and one officer fired his gun. The man died in hospital.  An autopsy is set for Wednesday in Sudbury.

The SIU takes over the investigation when a police officer is involved in an incident that results in harm to someone else.
