Timmins-James Bay federal NDP MP Charlie Angus is laying the blame for a major lawsuit at the feet of Ontario Premier Doug Ford.
Treaty Nine has filed the $95-million suit against both senior levels of government, over Ford refusing to engage with several First Nations who will be affected by the Ring of Fire.
Speaking in Parliament, Angus zeroed in on a specific issue.
“Doug Ford has thrown a major spike in this by doing away with the duty for mining companies to come up with the funds for environmental clean-up,” he said. “There isn’t a First Nation anywhere that’s going to allow mining without the guarantees for closure.”
“To the Minister,” Angus added. “What steps will he take to ensure that sustainability and the duty to consult remains at the heart of our critical mineral strategy?”
