An assistant coach the last two years will be in charge of the Kapuskasing Flyers for the 2023-24 season. Alex Plamondon takes over from Darren Potvin who opted not to return to the post. The Ecole Secondaire Cite des Jeunes teacher says he’s proud to carry on the tradition of great coaches.
“I think I have been able to develop a lot of relationships with the kids on the team, the ones that are coming back, the ones that are in our regional express program that might be coming up to try out,” he said. “I’m a big leadership guy, a motivator.”
He says two coaching mentors Glen Denney and Darren Potvin influenced him to be a coach.
“Glen had a big passion for the game and we talk about passion,” he said. “We also have to add Darren Potvin who has been with the Flyers the last 13 years and he keeps being involved. So the passion you see in those guys definitely reflects on my decision to be a head coach.”
The Flyers were eliminated in the semi-finals of the Great North U18 League’s championship tournament in March. Plamondon says he’s a big special-teams person but understands that defensively the team will have to get better, if they want to contend for a title.
