Legion banner program to honour vets who served returns for another year

Back by popular demand, Kapuskasing Legion Branch 85’s banner program to honour veterans is returning. Thirty-five flags were hung on many of the light poles of some of the major streets around the community last fall. Coordinator Dianne Leaist (Least) says the project exceeded everyone’s expectations.

“Everyone was thrilled with the results and nothing but positive comments from the public, and members of the Legion and the families both in town and out of town as well,” she said.

Leaist says the Legion will be using two local businesses to make and sew the flags this year. She adds that they’re hopeful the flags can go up much earlier.

“Last year was a bit of an anomaly because of ordering etc,” she said. “So they didn’t go up until October, but this year we expect they will go up at the start of September perhaps after Labour Day and be flow till after Remembrance Day.”

To learn more about the program or to get involved, contact the Royal Canadian Legion. Either drop by their bar, call 705-335-8895, email at [email protected]. The application deadline is April 30th.
