Kapuskasing new pool project pulled off the table

A proposal to build a new swimming pool in Kapuskasing has been pulled off the table….at least for now. The town has given permission for area communities to take money put in reserves for the project and use it for something else.

“We just want to relieve it and allow them to use that money for other purposes,” said mayor Dave Plourde. “We recognize that some of the other communities outside of Kapuskasing as well as Kapuskasing have money sitting in reserves that was earmarked for a new swimming pool and allow them to use it where they see fit.”

Plourde says it’s not fair for the public to fundraise for the project during these uncertain economic times.

“And recognizing that, the grants we are able to apply for don’t come anywhere near that and construction has catapulted that cost right out of sight for us for right now,” he said.

The Town of Kap has nearly $46,000 in reserves for the project and will decide what the best use is for it. One option might be to help with upgrades to Donat Brousseau Pool that includes replacing the front steps and the ramp.
