Colleges feel shut out by trades training funding announcement from Ford government

Ontario colleges are feeling snubbed by a Ford government announcement this week of $224-million to the private sector,  to build and upgrade training centres for skilled trades.

Northern College president Dr. Audrey Penner says the colleges are passionate about apprenticeship, training 80 percent of people in the system.

She hopes it’s just a matter of departments responsible for funding streams not communicating, which Penner says is a big gap.

“There has been a lack of funding for apprenticeship into the college system for a number of years now, “ she remarks. “So I think it’s time to make sure that people are aware of that.”

Penner adds that it’s especially important, given the urgent need for skilled trades. She also notes that the infrastructure is already in place at the colleges.

“I think it’s important. The taxpayers are already investing in what we have in the college, and we’re not seeing new expansion.”

Penner adds that in this region, Northern College is the only place doing the training. There are no union training centres or other alternatives.
