Hearst pet owners group want help attracting a veterinarian

A group of pet owners want help from the town of Hearst with veterinarian recruitment. The community has been without one since mid-December when Dr. Ramasurian Ramkumar stopped coming from Kapuskasing for his weekly visits.

Group president Jessie Lemieux says not having a pet doctor is troublesome and forces many people to travel for service.

“I think people know the roads really aren’t the best,” she said. “We have to travel to even buy dog food. I have one of my dogs who is elderly and needs special veterinary food so I have to go to Kap if I don’t want to find someone to deliver it here.”

Lemieux says they’ll also be contributing to it by starting up a Gofundme account.

“We’re going to start a scholarship for either kids from Hearst or whatsoever that can go into vet school,” she said. “So that’s our main goal next is to create an incentive to be able to have it on the list of what we can provide here in Hearst.”
