Modelled after a police recruitment incentive in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan — a community similar to Timmins – the Timmins Police Service is offering money for new recruits and experienced officers.
Board chair Kraymr Grenke says it will pay tuition at the Ontario Police College for any fresh new cadets. It also has an incentive for experienced officers.
“If you have been a police officer for three years at any Canadian police service,” he outlines, “you can come to the Timmins Police Service and you’ll be offered an incentive of $30,000 for a time commitment to stay for service as well.”
Both plans carry a five-year commitment. If an officer leaves before then, the money will be clawed back.
As for a new recruit headed off to Ontario Police College after a short time as a TPS cadet, Chief Dan Foy says tuition for a 12- or 13-wek course is usually about $15,500.
“Whatever fee is incurred, upon successful completion, they will get reimbursed that portion,” says the chief.
Right now, there are 80 uniformed officers from constable to chief. Foy says he wants to see all 96 spots filled.
