Hearst region home to new graphite mine

It appears that the Hearst region will get into the mining industry in about five years. Zentek, a southern Ontario based company, is looking at developing a 1.4 million-ton graphite deposit — 62 km northwest of Hearst and west of Constance Lake First Nation. Zentek executive chairman Francis Dube says the employment potential of the Albany Graphite Deposit could be huge.

“Just over 300 jobs would be full-time in the running of the mine,” he said. “Of course, there would be construction jobs before that and that would be a sizable project as well.”

Graphite is not only used in the production of electric car batteries but in making HVAC filters. Dube says having the mine near Highway 11 and the town of Hearst would be beneficial in production.

He adds that this coming year is important to Zentek to complete a couple of studies.

“Getting us into the potential to start the permitting process,” he said. “We do have to do a preliminary feasibility study and a full feasibility study. So the reality is that we are looking at three, four, five years before this gets into full production here.”
