Canadian figure skater Elvis Stojko in Kapuskasing this weekend

Elvis will be at the Sports Palace tomorrow…. that’s seven time Canadian figure skating champion Elvis Stojko. He will be putting on a workshop with his wife Gladys Orozco. About 40 skaters from across the region including as far away as Ottawa will be participating.

Kap Figure skating club president Lynn Ann Grzela says the sessions are broken up into on-ice and off-ice classes.

“Some sessions will be focusing on jumps, some focusing on spins,” she said. “There will be some focus on choreography, footwork edges. So it’s really an opportunity for a holistic approach and holistic learning to different aspects of figure skating.”

Grzela says these opportunities don’t happen often for smaller clubs in the north and are normally reserved for those in the south.

“But just the sheer cost and coordination of having skaters at this level travel up to give instruction to our skaters is often cost prohibited and challenging but we are lucky enough to be able to do it,” she said. “We are able to offer this experience to our skaters and skaters from other local clubs.”

You are invited down to the rink during the day to watch the on-ice activities.
