Hearst Access Centre welcoming students to further education

The Hearst Access Centre, connecting students to Northern College and Contact North officially opened on Tuesday. The ribbon cutting ceremony had been delayed due to the pandemic even though the centre has been open about a year. Academic upgrade instructor Mireille Morin says it’s a busy place with about 26 students taking courses.

“Right now it’s mostly with the ACE program, the academic upgrade,” she said. “I do have clients that are newcomers that come to learn the English language, offer them the opportunity to get some upgrading for communications.”

Morin says the centre welcomes students from as far away as Constance Lake and even Kapuskasing.

“We have access to different courses,” she said. “We have access to technology here like we have computers. If somebody doesn’t have a computer we can find one for them to work at home from. We are very flexible in that sense.”

The Centre is open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and located at 15th street and Highway 11.
