Smooth Rock Falls to host flood or forest fire evacuees this spring and summer

The Town of Smooth Rock Falls will be hosting forest fires or floods evacuees from further north this spring and summer. It’s the first time the community is lending a hand since prior to the start of the pandemic.

Mayor Patrick Roberts says the town could welcome about 100 people, and noted that changes are being made to the way it was done in the past.

“And we will be going with a provincial hosting model or NGO support,” he said. “It’s a non-governmental organization. And should Smooth Rock Falls host an evacuation it will be managed by the NGO but we will help them out as well too.”

He says the town is happy to be part of the program again.

“Last year we wanted to do it, but it was like we had a lot of work going on in the town itself so we are kind of looking for a third party kind of situation here,” he said.
