Responsible Camping Practices in the North

Camping and bonfire season is upon us as summer has fully taken hold here in the Northeast.

Bill Mauro, Minister of the M-N-R and Forestry says that by following a few simple steps you can help keep the many natural resources here in Ontario safe.

Try to choose a site near a water source or sheltered from the wind so you can reduce the risk of loose embers, building your fires on a rock surface, in a metal fire pit or bare dirt and of course never leaving an open fire unattended at your bonfires or camp sites.

Last year over 60 per cent of forest fires in the Province were caused by humans and on average Ontario experiences at least one wildfire every day due to an un-extinguished or unattended camp fire.
