Sensenbrenner Hospital has three surgeons to help with new operating room

Kapuskasing’s Sensenbrenner Hospital now has a full staff of three surgeons thanks to the hard work of the health care recruitment committee. Chief of Staff Doctor Jessica Kwapis says having three surgeons will benefit everyone in the area when the second operating room opens later this summer.

“As an example we are pleased to announce that we will soon be able to provide breast cancer surgeries at Sensenbrenner Hospital,” she said. “It’s thanks to our local surgeons’ expertise as well as equipment and the facilities that are being funded through this initiative.”

Kwapis says the second operating room will allow them to see 10 to 15 per cent more patients.

“So it will make us more efficient during the day,” she said. “It will also mean for example if there is an emergency caesarian section, we can pull them into our second operating room and potentially if we have the staff we can continue our elective list without having to cancel them.”

The hospital currently has just one anesthetist and is actively recruiting a second one until another completes a return to service in the next few years.

Kapuskasing currently has eight family practitioners, five nurse practitioners, three surgeons, one internist and one anesthetist.
