The Kapuskasing Indian Friendship Centre is teaming up with school boards in the area to help mark National Indigenous People’s Day on June 21. Centre’s Executive Director Karen Tessier says more than 250 students are expected to attend and learn more about the indigenous culture.
“We have medicine wheel teachings and the children will be able to make medallions out of Birch Bark on the medicine wheel,” she said. “We have the traditional sport of archery that the children will be able to try out, and seven grandfather teachings.”
Tessier says the day is a great way to share the culture.
“And how our cultures celebrate and remember and everything is around the language the teachings, the traditions,” she said. “So we really want to showcase and celebrate together and just share what the culture is all about.”
Tessier says the staff has been working on renovating the back of the Friendship Centre building to host more events in the future. The Centre received a two-year grant through the Hearst-Kapuskasing-Smooth Rock Falls Counselling Services, Victim Services and Habitat Interlude to help with those projects and events.
