Val Rita-Harty hosting Kashechewan residents

The community of Val Rita-Harty is now hosting evacuees from Kashechewan.

Forty people arrived from flights yesterday, following a state of emergency declaration due to flooding along the James Bay Coast and Albany River. CAO Jimmy Cote says the evacuees are staying at the Five Star Emergency and Training facility formerly the Auberge Owens Inn.

He adds that town hall is waiting to hear from the province on whether it will get any more evacuees.

Val Rita-Harty Mayor Johanne Baril says the work of hosting evacuees is challenging, but the community must do its part to support reconciliation. She adds this is an opportunity to learn, share and develop friendships.
