Weather causing delays in evacuation flights from James Bay coast

Weather issues have forced the cancellation of flights of evacuees from Kashechewan First Nation to Kapuskasing until at least tomorrow.

Four of the 10 flights arrived at the Kapuskasing Airport last night of the most vulnerable seniors with medical issues and young families.

A state of emergency was issued by Kashechewan First Nation officials over the spring thaw on the Albany River and the James Bay Coast.

Kapuskasing Fire Chief and Evacuation Committee chairman Pat Kennedy says there’s lots of snow and ice up north, and the conditions are being compared to 2009 which resulted in flooding to some of the land.
