Town of Kap prepares plans to host evacuees this spring

Even though it may seem early the town of Kap is trying to get its evacuation plan together for the Spring. Under the current plan due to the COVID-19 health restrictions, Kapuskasing can host 200 evacuees. Mayor Dave Plourde says there is still time to finalize everything before the ice starts to break up.

“The lifting of measures doesn’t happen until March so this will be revisited after March. and we will look at capacity limits with COVID-19 and make decisions after that,” he said.

Plourde says the Model Town always has its welcome mat ready to answer the call.

“We’ve been there to host evacuations for such a long time and it’s not something that’s uncommon,” he said. “There have been years that we haven’t hosted evacuees. And we hope that they are able to come out as they sometimes do.”

Administrator Guylain Baril told town council on Tuesday night that the ability to host will depend on hotel availability at that time. The hotels must be exclusive to the evacuees. He adds it’s the town’s decision on the number of evacuees that will be hosted at the time when the call comes in.
