There could be more advance polls in this fall’s Kapuskasing municipal election. That was one of several recommendations made to Town Council on Monday night by Clerk Chantal Guillemette. She says four advance polls could increase voter turnout and help out of town workers.
“Alter between a Saturday and a Wednesday, which is normally the days we would see the rotation of these workers working out at the mines coming back to town so they can come in and vote,” she said.
Other recommendations to the town council include what voting equipment will be used for the election and a recount policy. She says the equipment is old technology and is no longer supported with parts.
“But we are sending them out for servicing and maintenance and to determine if the efficiency and accuracy is still something we can count on to use for the next election,” she said.
She says that voting equipment is only used every four years so council would have to decide whether to purchase or lease new equipment with no guarantee that it would be available by Election Day. She says using online voting is not an option because of the costly nature of it.
Town Council has until May to approve the recommendations or make any changes. The municipal election is this Monday, Oct. 24.
