Hearst delays official launch of 100th anniversary celebrations until August

The 100th anniversary celebrations for the Town of Hearst have been delayed until later this summer. Economic Development Officer Alain Blanchette says the original launch date was January 21st during a Hearst Lumberjacks hockey game but that had to be cancelled because of the shutdown. He adds the decision was made by Hearst Town Council to delay the actual launch until August 3rd which is the day Hearst was incorporated as a town.

“Instead of spending a lot of energy doing the meetings in virtual, they really wanted the in person experience to be there,” he said. “We have been in virtual settings for too long now and they didn’t want to add to that.”

Blanchette says two events will go ahead before the launch including the commemorative 100th anniversary book.

“Since having a book doesn’t affect the sanitary measures, they’ve decided to launch the book as soon as the book would be ready,” he said. “To add to a certain flavour to the centennial.”

The former Slovakian community of Bradlo which was located between Hearst and Jogues will go ahead with its reunion at the end of June. Blanchette says many of the activities take place outdoors and the reunion is much smaller in size than the actual Town of Hearst Rendezvous that was planned for July.
