Le Reseau Du Nord exploring idea of Kapuskasing being home to Afghanistan refugees

A northern immigration group wants Kapuskasing to be home of refugees from Afghanistan. Town Council heard the proposal from Le Reseau Du Nord during a special meeting. Mayor Dave Plourde says the community has always been very inclusive whether its evacuees from the north people from other countries.

“Very receptive to what the presentation brought and I think we gave them the green light to go ahead,” he said. “I think we would certainly assist them in anything they would need and see what is required, and let us know as early as they can how we can help.”

Plourde says council is supportive to bringing the refugees up here and get them settled.

“They left their homes in not a good situation where they were and certainly it’s about us doing everything we can to make sure they feel safe and hopefully making Kapuskasing their home,” he said.

Settlement Services officials say the refugees could provide assistance to the current labor shortage in the region, and wanted to get the perspective on the plan from key community people, including town council before going ahead with a formal plan.
