Another COVID-19 death in PHU region

UPDATE: Another 19 cases added for a total of 26 today; 1,393 overall and 351 active.  Of the 19 new ones, 12 are in Timmins, three somewhere between Smooth Rock Falls and Matheson, three between Hearst and Hornepayne and one on the coast.

There’s been another death due to COVID-19 reported today by Porcupine Health Unit medical officer of health Dr. Lianne Catton.

“This is in a Timmins individual, an older individual who was unwell and we are truly sad to have to share this again,” she says. That brings the regional death toll during the pandemic to 27.

Catton says there have been 1,374 cases, of which 332 are currently active. Seven were added today, consisting of five in Timmins and two on the coast..  One-thousand-and-twenty-eight have occurred during the third wave. Six-hundred-and-seventy-four of them are due to the variant that originated in the United Kingdom.

Meanwhile, Catton says she’s “very, very pleased” that over 65 percent of people over 18 in the Porcupine Health Unit area have been vaccinated.

“This amounts to 44,306 people or 67% have received their first dose and 5,352 are fully vaccinated, which is at about 8%.”

The MOH says the health unit will continue to have more vaccination clinics in more communities, removing barriers for people who have a hard time getting to one.
