Having water bill mailed could cost money

It may cost you in the future to have your water bills mailed to you. A proposal to charge residents $20 for having their bill mailed to them was scrubbed by Council on Monday night.  The Town Of Kapuskasing is looking at a number of options to help ease people from mail to e-billing.  Councillor Bruce Newton objected to the proposed $20 fee saying that elderly people simply can’t afford to get the internet and some don’t even have access to email. Mayor Dave Plourde says you can’t penalize people for not having internet or email.

“Our population is getting older and not everyone can afford the Internet or understand how to use their email,” he said. “That’s where we as a council must find solutions that are best for our demographics.”

It costs the Town of Kapuskasing $800 every three months, plus man hours to prepare the bills and mail them out.

“This is an incurring cost that we have for the service so we have to look how to keep those costs in line,” he said.

Some Councillors think that there should be an easy transition into e-billing rewarding residents for choosing the service.
