No sign yet of BC fugitives in Kapuskasing region

OPP officers on patrol in the Kapuskasing area are still keeping an eye out for the suspicious car that some people believe was being driven by two fugitives from murder charges out west.

Bryer Schmegelsky and Kam McLeod are accused of murdering three people in northern British Columbia.

OPP media coordinator, Acting Sergeant Shona Camirand, says the North East Region has received “a couple dozen calls” about suspicious people that might resemble the pair.

“Yesterday (Wednesday), as this was going on in Kapuskasing, we got one (call) in Sudbury.  And then another one in Cochrane last night that turned out to be tree planters,” she relates. “So the public is doing a great job and they’re being vigilant and they’re calling in tips and we’re going to follow up on them.”

Camirand says all information will be followed up.

“At this time, we don’t know who was in the vehicle.  So I can’t say it was them and I can’t say it wasn’t them.  But Kapuskasing is a far place from Gillam, Manitoba.  I can say that.”

Camirand asks that if you spot anything, don’t just share it on social media.  Call police immediately.
