FONOM Pleased With Province’s Increase To Ontario Municipal Partnership Fund

The provincial government is giving a boost to communities all throughout Ontario.

Earlier this week an increase was announced to the Ontario Municipal Partnership Fund by $5 million in 2018, bringing the total to $510 million in funding for all 389 municipalities across the province.

FONOM President and Kapuskasing Mayor Alan Spacek released a statement Friday afternoon thanking the government for recognizing the financial challenges that municipalities are currently facing.

Spacek says that more funding will be increased for the Northern and Rural Fiscal Circumstances Grant, the Rural Communities Grant and the Northern Communities Grant.

He says they want to acknowledge the government for fulfilling an earlier commitment from 2008 to have social assistance costs among other social program expenses covered for and completely removed from municipal taxes.

Spacek says while FONOM is pleased with the increase in funding overall, it is important to note not all communities will be seeing increases, and even some will see decreases in the coming year.
