Engineer Not Guilty Of Elliot Lake Mall Collapse In 2012

The engineer charged in connection with the deadly collapse of the Algo Centre Mall in Elliot Lake has been found not guilty.  Robert Wood faced several charges including two counts of criminal negligence causing death.  Two Elliot Lake women died when the roof top parking lot of the mall caved in and fell on the shopping concourse below during the afternoon of June 23rd, 2012.  More than 20 people were also injured.  Wood was the last person to inspect the mall only weeks before the collapse and gave it the seal of approval.  The judge hearing the case, Edward Gareau, says there wasn’t enough evidence of criminal negligence to convict Wood beyond a reasonable doubt.  But Gareau added the former engineer will have to accept a moral responsibility for his actions which will follow him for the rest of his life.   No one else has ever been charged in the collapse of the mall.  Wood was the only person charged by the OPP in connection with the collapse following a lengthy investigation.
